This is a picture of some of the roads in Kryvyi Rih. We decided we might have a better chance of surviving if we took the train.

It might look like slush, but it isn't. It is solid ice. The cars drive on the sidewalks in places to avoid it.

So we took the electric train from Dnipro to Kryvyi Rih. It was a three hour ride.
On the way over, we loved it. Not too cold and a much smoother and safer ride than the car.

On the way back to Dnipro, we weren't so sure. It was freezing cold. Only ride the electric train during the day or wear 10 layers.

This lady was singing in the train for money. Every where we go there is some beggar person asking for money, or bread. Sara is always worried about them. She tells me what they are saying and pleads with me to give them money or food, or whatever we have. I love Sara's tender heart.

Our apartment in Kryvyi Rih was like a fridge. We had to wear our coats and keep bundled up, even when we slept. Ha Ha!

The landlord insisted Jeff wear these kitty slippers. The girls got a huge kick out of it.

Main street in Kryvyi Rih and Lena's favorite blue church. She kept saying how cute she thought it was.

We spent three wonderful days with Zhenya. The director let us visit for an hour and a half in the morning and an hour and a half in the afternoon.

Lena noticed the finger Zhenya was using to touch the screen on the phone and said, "Look Mom, Dona will like him." Sorry, only funny if you know Dona, and then it is hilarious.

One day Zhenya was talking to Jeff and Jeff wasn't responding. Sara told Zhenya, "He can't understand you."
Zhenya said, "Yes he can."
Sara said, "He can't speak Russian, so no he can't."
He said without hesitation, "He can understand me because he loves me."

Zhenya loved to play doggy with me. He told me I was the mom dog and he was the baby dog. We barked at each other, then he snuggled up to me. It is funny, because he isn't usually comfortable with me touching him, but when I am a dog, he pets my head and hugs me.
A trick I learned from Dona's little girl Eli. She loves me best when I am a dog too. Zhenya doesn't like my kitty though, he says it scares him. Too bad, that is Eli's favorite. She loves scary kitty. We laugh our heads off. Sure miss my Eli.

When we told him we had to leave the last day, he said, "Are you coming back after lunch?" We told him we couldn't we had to go see Alina, his sister. He said, "My sister wants to come with you and I want to come with you."
It was so hard to leave that kid.

The director asked him if he wanted to come with us and he said, "Yes."
She said, "Are you sure, you can't change your mind and you can never come back."
He said, "Yes I want to go."
Sadly, he thought that meant right then and he was sad when he couldn't come.
Looks like we are winning the war. The more we are with him, the more certain we are that he is ours. I am not too worried about court anymore. We have come too far and been through too much to not get him now. You are right Christy, Zhenya is going to be ours.

Shelby and Mary, this is a stuffed dog on the couch at the orphanage. You were wondering. They have some pretty scary stuffed creatures. I think Ukrainians excel at decorating with stuffed things.

This our last night in Kryvyi Rih. I made potato salad because it sounded good, but the mayo was yuck. Then I tried a grilled cheese, but the cheese was yuck. I couldn't even think about the beet salad the girls were eating. They guaranteed me I would like the Ukraine version of Ramen noodles. Nope! They told me I couldn't waste food, I had to eat it. I said new rule, if you don't like it, don't eat it and I threw it all away. The girls and Jeff got a big kick out of it, hence the picture.
So, I already like Zhenya...He's afraid of cats, just like me! Your battle with the food made me laugh because it's sometimes like that even here:)ha ha!! Trying to find the perfect meal! I like your rule though, don't eat it! Oh the stuffed animals...what else can you say.
ReplyDeleteYou guys all look very happy and sounds like everything is coming together finally! Hooray, you are ALL coming home.
John hates cats too so he and Zhenya will get along great! I can't wait to see you ALL home. I'm so sorry about the food. I wish I could box up something yummy and send it to you. You will have to let me know what you want when you get home and I will make it for you. Well, anything but shrimp or any other seafood because I don't allow that in my house. If you want that, I will volunteer Cheri.
ReplyDelete"He understands me because he loves me"...well that about sums it up. That is so precious! I think he's beginning to understand what a mom and a dad and a family is. It's funny how we trick our kids into giving us affection. The only way we can get Bronson to give us kisses is to say "ewwww, don't give me a yucky kiss". Then he laughs and attacks us with kisses. Works every time and it's just as sweet to me as if he had done it just because he wanted to. So glad things are working out. Can't wait for the court stuff to be done so you can rest emotionally. Hope you stay warm. How miserable! I like Jeff's slippers. Alyssa has some hello kitty earmuffs that would go great with them if he'd like to borrow them. Shelby
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the tribute! I am feeling a very strong bond with Will right now!:) I am glad he loves playing dog. Elise was talking about Rosie today, I guess she needs some quality dog time with you and Will. Oh, the food and cold!! I am glad you only have to be there no more than two months ......... I couldn't help but think of my beet salad / cottage cheese salad fiasco when I was in Estonia. Nothing is worse than anticipating something so delicious and then to eat the most vile thing you have ever tasted. My prayers are with you. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember those roads! I couldn't believe Lena was trying to tell me that I'd die if I took the bus and not her "safe" driver. LOL I figured that even if the bus crashed we'd fair better than with him (though he wasn't bad) AND we'd have saved a bunch of money.
ReplyDeleteZhenya is SO cute! I love all the pictures and I'm so glad he's getting more comfortable with you guys. Still praying for you!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all the pictures and I am glad that Will is feeling the love and goodness that you all radiate all the time. He will be the luckiest little boy and we can't wait to meet him and see Spencer give him a big hug.
ReplyDeleteToday on the news they showed the Black Sea and said that it is now frozen and creaking as the ice rubs together and against the rocks.. That is REALLY COLD. Bryan said that he has been talking on Skype with friends in Ukraine and they say it is the coldest that it has been in many many years. We seem to be having record breaking warm weather here and so I am sorry that you are getting all of the cold up there. At least you have something warmer to look forward to when you get home. Will and Alina will know immediately that they made the right choice :)
I am glad that you discovered the train to Krivy. Can't wait to hear about court and I hope it is warmer in Germany. Thanks for blogging. I feel sorry for you and the food situation. We survived because we loved the ice cream but that probably doesn't sound very good in that weather. Wish we were there to get you some yummy hot chocolate.
Hang in and cuddle.
Christy
Loved this post. So many pics and so much information. Will is such a cutie! Can't wait to meet them all! love you all! (Debbie, AZ)
ReplyDeleteOh my! We all laughed at Jeff's kitty slippers!! Too funny.
ReplyDeleteAlex saw the road picture and went on an on about getting stuck in a rut in a frozen road with his brother.
LOVED the "he can because he loves me..." so dang sweet! I just know this will all work out. Like Cristy said, "When there's a WILL there's a way!"
I get cold just looking at your pictures. Brrrr.....
I'm heading out of town tomorrow and not sure I'll have internet access at all so don't feel neglected by me. Know you're in my heart and I will catch up when I get home. Email me with court news at wendy@wendymyagent.com
I will see if you're on Skype today and see where you're at on time frame and if you need me to come.
Sweet, darling post! I can't wait to meet him in person. I will be sure to do my best dog imitation so he will perhaps like me too?
